Is your mind stuck in a former version of yourself? Our self-perception can have a direct impact on how we feel about progressing in our lives.

Bizarrely I was called something I never expected earlier this year. An observation a colleague made of me truly floored me. I mean really floored me. I was shocked.

He said I was… a calm shell with a deep mind.

My mum laughed when I told her. As did my husband.

That’s because they know a different version of me. In my mum’s head I’m perpetually 16, in my husband’s I’m guessing 24?

In my own…? Maybe 26? Am I still waiting to grow up? Growing up isn’t a simple, linear process. We all have stumbling blocks, struggles and hurdles to overcome: that’s life. It adds to its richness. It builds character. It makes us who we are. But it’s not a final process. As people, we don’t simply stop changing with time, we are constantly evolving into new iterations of ourselves.

Who are you in your own mind?

Are you progressing towards your life goal?

What barriers have you put in place to your own progress?

Are you who you want to be when you grow up or are you still waiting to grow up?

We forget, as we age, that we are ageing. And we are. Don’t deny it. In my head I’m still waiting for the grown up me to show up. Listen up sister, she’s here, and if you keep waiting you’re going to miss all the incredible opportunities that are coming your way.

It’s time to step up lady, because you’re a grown up now. Not a chick, not a girl. A fierce, strong example of an incredible, amazing smart woman.

All these ideas you had and have in your head about who you’re going to be when you grow up? It’s time to step up, show up, grow up and be your authentic self.

Find your passion, find your joy and find your real you. Do it, be it, live it, love it. Every. Single. Day.

Have you taken the time recently to work out what is really important to you? At your core? Or are you floating through life relying solely on the strength of the coffee you had this morning to propel you towards… what? What is your goal? Do you have a life vision? Do you have an overarching idea of who and what you want to be and do?

Take some time to think about what is really important in your life. Too often we leave school. Go to uni or get a job and stick with that. Day in, day out. Living pretty miserable lives. Are you really prepared to do this every day until retirement? Will you lead a happy life? Will you lead a fulfilling life? A life with meaning?

If you are happy with that idea, fantastic. Congratulations, I am so very happy for you. I mean it. But for everybody else, do you have any idea where you’re headed? Other than to work tomorrow?

What if you weren’t meant to be doing what you are doing day in day out? What is it you are meant to be doing? What is your direction? What is your goal? What is your vision? Your purpose?
